Off Moorfield Road, Oversley Green, Alcester, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire Situated at the entrance to the car park for a Simply Fresh convenience shop is a 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' 'Byway-X' column, with a short outreach 15 degree up-tilting bracket and Simplex Diadem lantern, for 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) and 50 - 70 Watt SON (high pressure sodium) lamps. A notable feature of this particular column is its rather pronounced lean, though it still remains solid enough in the ground - its private ownership being a likely reason that it has remained in this state, rather than being straightened.
The reason for the pronounced lean is probably identified by the adjacent brickwork of the wall having evidence of being repaired at some stage - a vehicle probably hit the wall, and nudged the column in the process.
Despite the collision, the concrete shows no visible stress cracks, suggesting that the collision occurred at a low speed.
The column is also leaning slightly forwards, but not as heavily as with its sideways lean.
Unlike the 'shy' wood pigeon seen on the previous page, this one rather enjoyed being the centre of attention!
This is probably a 1980s' installation (the Diadem, rather than the pigeon...), with the Royce Thompson P42 two-part photocell detector attached to the Diadem's canopy likely being original.
The polycarbonate bowl has discoloured heavily during the lantern's many years of service.
The base doesn't feature any obvious collision damage - probably just as well, considering that I was standing right by it!
