The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 11th December 2010.
The majority of the outgoing lanterns installed along this road were Thorn Beta 5s. The first column from Chellaston Road (a CU hockey stick; dating from the early-mid 2000s) was fitted with such a lantern.
The existing columns were sporadic at best; the PFI scheme saw some of the new columns installed in locations where there had previously been no dedicated column installed.
Possibly the oldest Beta 5 on the road was this side-entry example, which dated from the late 1970s or early 1980s (the stainless steel bowl clip is evidence of this). The reflector looked especially rusty.
This shallow-bowled Beta 5 was fitted to a sleeved Stanton 7 concrete column; installed on a short service road.
Another hockey stick was installed at the other end of this service road.
Adjacent tree branches had gradually scraped off some of the column's paint finish.
Back on the 'main' road now, and a slightly older Beta 5 is spotted.
Owing to the width of the road in some places, new columns have been installed in an opposite arrangement.
This outgoing lantern's effectiveness was somewhat...questionable...due to its bracket facing away from the road!
The second service road was home to a further two sleeved Stanton columns. These Beta 5s incorporated deep bowls.
An anti-glare shield was already to the distant Iridium, even though the new lighting was not yet operational.
At the end of the service road, the lantern type briefly changed to GEC Z9532s.
This example was at the junction of Carlton Drive.
One concrete column still retained its original top-entry bracket. The Beta 5 was suitably equipped to deal with this difference in mounting position.
