The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 10th October 2010; all but one of the lanterns that were installed on this road were Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lanterns.
The first Beta 5 was of the early 1980s' design.
The photocell fitted was a Royce Thompson Monostar 1000.
The adjacent Culworth Court was, and is, home to a single column; the lack of suitable locations for installing columns in this area being the reason.
Returning to Charingworth Road, and a slightly different version of the Beta 5 was seen - this was of the style produced towards the end of the 1980s; when the canopy depth was reduced.
The replacement column is situated slightly further forward in the grass verge than the outgoing column was.
The perspective in this photograph makes both installations appear the same height; in reality, of course, the new column is taller.
The new columns were not yet operational at this time.
The next new column was positioned away from its outgoing equivalent.
The design of the bracket orientated the lantern at a rather steep angle. This is also a late 1980s' Beta 5, although a shallow bowl (introduced with this version of the lantern) was fitted.
The following installation saw a return to the early 1980s' version - I reckon that these installations dated from the time that this version was being withdrawn, and the shallower version being introduced; hence the variety in designs.
A Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell was fitted here - this is the type of cell that was fitted to all new lanterns installed under the PFI, prior to September 2010.
Once again, the new column positions were different to those of the outgoing columns along this section of road.
Travelling around the bend (as I do on a regular basis) saw a return to the new columns being installed alongside an outgoing column.
The gasket on this late 1980s' Beta 5 can be seen inside the bowl - it should be tucked up inside the canopy.
The first new column on Gatcombe Close looked to have originally been proposed directly in front of a driveway (notice the circular 'SL' mark on the footway) - thankfully, the column was actually installed away from the driveway!
Zooming in on the Beta 5 reveals that the lantern's last lamp (a Philips) was fitted in February 2008. The photocell here is a Zodion SS3DR, dating from the mid 2000s.
The replacement Iridium was fitted with a cell designed to switch on at 35 Lux, and off again at 18 Lux, in an energy conservation move.
The new columns could be spaced further apart than the old columns could:
Moving on along the road, I suspect that this column may be a little older than those pictured above were - the bracket is not as angular, and the shoulder at the column base is more curved. The column was possibly an Abacus product.
The evergreen tree created a useful backdrop for picturing the lantern against.
The final Beta 5 was surrounded by an abundance of tree branches; hence the new column being positioned about a metre away, so as to situate the lantern away from the branches.
A 6 m column supporting the Beta 5's big brother, the 55 Watt Beta 2, was situated at the Bishop's Drive / Springwood Drive roundabout.
