The following photographs were taken on Thursday, 8th April 2010. Except for the first column, GEC Z5698U lanterns each provided approximately thirty years of service on this cul-de-sac. The outgoing columns had all been removed by Friday, 23rd April 2010.
A Thorn Gamma 6 replaced the first Z5698U in the mid-1990s. For some years prior to the Gamma 6's removal, an internal component could be seen hanging alongside one of the internal support rods. This version of the Gamma 6 normally accommodated all gear components within the lantern's base casting, so the hanging component is something of a mystery, although it is most likely to be the ignitor.
The same Gamma 6 again; this time looking towards Brierfield Way.
The second column along the road, featuring the first Z5698U, did not have a new column positioned adjacent - this column would be replaced directly, owning to the limited space within the flowerbed.
The canopy securing toggle on the following Z5698U was positioned away from the carriageway, although I reckon that it would have originally faced the correct way around - at some point since its original installation, the canopy would have been removed in its entirety (probably if access to the gear was required) and then fitted the opposite way around when the lantern was re-assembled.
The next column along tried to camouflage itself in order to escape removal:
The final Z5698U was installed on the footpath linking Downham Close, Pendlebury Drive and Springdale Court with Brierfield Way. The canopy on this lantern looked rather crooked; perhaps due to its being installed on the hinged column.
