Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Kings Croft, Allestree

The lighting along this road consisted of 8 m tubular steel columns supporting 90 Watt SOX lanterns, with Thorn Alpha 4s being the most common type. As you will see, this does not equate with the wattages stated in the below inventory record from 1997, suggesting that many of the columns listed here were replaced after then. This is likely to be a factor in explaining why the columns were not renewed during the mass-replacement PFI work.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 19th September 2015.

The first column from the Palm Court Roundabout was of a slightly earlier construction, and supported a Thorn Alpha 9 lantern. This installation was previously pictured for the Palm Court relighting page; however, at the time, its bowl was missing. Notice the PFI-specification column in the background; the previous column at this location also accommodated an Alpha 9, though in later years, this was replaced with an Alpha 4.

The 'new' bowl is likely to be second-hand, and was probably rescued from a scrapped Alpha 9.

The original painted stencil number has been renewed using a PFI-style label number. Don't worry; I didn't suffer a dramatic fall seconds before taking this picture, and neither was there a severe landslip; the column is at a rather jaunty angle here as I hadn't originally planned to use this photograph, and simply took it in order that I would know whether this column was part of Kings Croft's lighting or not.

Two of the newer columns supporting Alpha 4s are visible below.

One of this lantern's rear bowl clips has possibly broken, leading to the back of the bowl being secured using a length of insulation tape.

The columns are made by CU Phosco.

A Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell, dating from the start of the PFI, is fitted to this lantern.
