The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 11th June 2011.

The outgoing lighting was largely unchanged from when the above records were last relevant. Almost all of the outgoing columns supported a  Philips MA 50 135 Watt SOX lantern at the time of removal. This location is unusual, in that every variety of the MA 50 appeared.

This lantern is of the integrally-geared, gear-in-shoe variant, and probably dates from the early 1980s.

The next column supported the remotely-geared version of the above lantern. The PFI-style columns visible here were installed when the northerly section of Duffield Road, Darley Abbey was relit in May 2009.

The small-shoe versions of the MA 50 lanterns are possibly the rarest out of all variants; the reason being that Philips quickly changed the design of the rear section to the flatter type that newer lanterns use.

A panoramic view of this portion of the roundabout now follows.

Another gear-in-shoe version then came into view.

The new columns appear to be either 11 m or 12 m in height.

Possibly the oldest column on the roundabout was this Abacus tubular steel, which ended its days supporting an integrally-geared, gear-in-lantern MA 50 version.

The bracket may have supported an Atlas Alpha 8 twin-lamp lantern when new.

The illuminated signage was also due for replacement as part of this scheme - here, the posts supporting a Signature 'Majorlite L8' (left) and Road Signs Franco RS105 L8 (right) signlight were soon to disappear. This is the southbound A38 'on' sliproad.

The only relatively recent column replacement on the roundabout came in the form of this 10 m tubular steel supporting a Holophane Syracuse Medium (QSM) 150 Watt SON-T lantern.

This was then followed by another remotely-geared MA 50.

A 1990s' Sirebeck S300 photocell was fitted to this lantern.

An installation not on the roundabout, and not planned for removal under this scheme, was this 8 m column supporting a bowl-less Thorn Alpha 9 90 Watt SOX lantern. The block-shaped design of the Alpha 9 (poet and I don't know it!) makes for a rather un-aerodynamic lantern, and as the bowl is heavy, strong gusts of wind can cause it to become detached quite easily.

Back to the roundabout, and another gear-in-lantern MA 50 could be seen.

The six (seven on later models) clips attached to this lantern, and substantially more aerodynamic design ensures that MA lantern bowls are a lot more difficult to lose than Alpha 9 bowls are!

Replacement lighting was still to be installed for the central island signs. Here, a Pearce Gowshall L68/25 signlight illuminated the 'Turn Left' arrow.

A later MA 50 (with the newer-style bracket spigot) was nearby. It had been dayburning for some time when these pictures were taken.

The fault would not be rectified at this late stage in the column's life.

A newer column supporting another gear-in-lantern MA 50 followed.

The presence of the seventh (front) bowl clip was introduced by Philips in the mid-1990s, in order to increase the IP rating to IP65.

The next installation saw a brief return to gear-in-shoe lanterns.

The final column changed yet again.

Notice the lack of a front clip on this lantern.

A couple of Forest City LB128 signlights provided illumination to the two speed limit signs at the top of the A38 southbound 'off' sliproad. The dayburning Iridium in the background of the right-hand picture comes under the maintenance of the Highways Agency and not the council.
