The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 11th March 2012.

A Revo 'Moseley' cast iron column supporting a CU Phosco P109 post-top lantern was located up from New Road's junction with Darley Street. The P109 lanterns are original to the initial 'heritage' scheme that occurred here in the 1970s - the columns all having been used elsewhere in the City before being refurbished and (re)installed in the narrow streets of Darley Abbey village. It is believed that the P109s ran 80 Watt MBF lamps when new, but were converted to run 70 Watt SON-E lamps later.

The replacement lanterns specified for this part of Darley Abbey are made by SUGG, to their 'Camberwell' design. All are fitted with a Philips 70 Watt CDO-ET lamp. Some of the outgoing lanterns also ended their days running the same.

The difference in height between the old and new installations (even with the considerable height of the P109 lantern!) is shown here. Notice the replacement inspection door fitted to the outgoing column.

Most of the lanterns in this area were still reliant on mechanical solar time switches for their operation even by the time that they were due to be removed. The new lanterns are switched by miniature photocells fitted to one of the four panels above the glazed section.

The P109 fitted to this column was one of the few that still retained its central copper finial - this screws onto a threaded rod that protrudes from the top of the canopy and ensures that the canopy will not accidentally work loose. The replacement column was still awaiting its lantern at the time of photographing.

The replacement columns were cast at a foundry in Huddersfield especially for this scheme. They replicate the a style of column that still exists in the grounds of the nearby St Matthew's Church - this was made by a Derby-based foundry in 1865. The lantern fitted to this column is very similar in appearance to the Camberwell, and could be an earlier version of the design.

The next installation had been replaced with a PFI specification column and second-hand Iridium lantern in June 2009. I commented at the time that I hoped the installation would be only a temporary measure until something more appropriate could be installed; thankfully, this was what happened almost three years later! The new column would be positioned in more or less exactly the same space that the Moseley was removed from those few years ago. Prior to the Moseley's installation, a 5 m tubular steel column supporting a Thorn Beta 7 lantern existed at this location, as proven by this photograph taken in approximately 1975.

The Iridium ran a SON-T lamp.

The next outgoing installation comprised a DW Windsor 'Warwick' attached to the Bleeco version of the Moseley column.

A short Revo 'Hull' column supporting a Phosco P111 lantern marked the junctions of the rear entrance to Darley Park and Mile Ash Lane. The P111 was a relatively recent replacement lantern; previously, another Warwick had adorned this column. A GE-made SON-E lamp was fitted in the Phosco lantern. The original inspection door for this column had been exchanged for a sheet of aluminium that had been secured using a "Tamtorque" band.

The two 'No Entry' signs at the end of the road were also planned for removal as part of the works - the replacement signpost can be seen alongside.
