A GEC Z5698U marked the entrance to this short cul-de-sac.

Another Z5698U would once have been installed on this column; a Thorn Gamma 6 replaced it in the 1990s. Notice the Hitchcockian-type shadow being cast by the Gamma 6 on the fence behind - the Iridium had better watch its back!

The same installation as above, but this time photographed from the footpath linking Roughton Close, Ardleigh Close and Ingham Drive.

By Sunday, 4th April 2010 (Easter Sunday), the Gamma 6's column had been disconnected and the service transferred to the new column. The column supporting the Z5698U lantern had been removed, and the new column in the middle of Roughton Close was in operation. (If an award exists for the "most uses of the word 'column' in a single sentence", I think I may have just won it!)

The photographs below show the contents of the Gamma 6 column's base. The existing supply cable has been jointed in order for it to reach the new installation. A new length of cable connects to the other new column on Roughton Close. Notice the outgoing column's discarded door and fuse carrier - removed Lucy MC040 cut-outs were often reused in columns of this age. I decided to liberate the fuse carrier, as the ESLA's cut-out is of the same type, and it's always good to keep spares of obsolete products!

The carriers originally supported a length of fuse wire between the two terminals, but conveniently, the BS88 fuses commonly used in street lighting applications these days are just the right length to fit between the terminals, and so these are employed instead.
