Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Uttoxeter Road, Mickleover (Part Five)

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 2nd April 2011.

From the Rough Heanor Road / Corden Avenue junction onwards, the lighting consisted of 10 m tubular steel columns (many approaching forty years old); mainly supporting remotely-geared Thorn Alpha 4 135 Watt SOX lanterns.

The GRP canopies of the Alpha 4s looked decidedly the worst-for-wear after serving approximately thirty years' service on the road. These replaced higher-wattage MBF lanterns in the 1980s.

Despite the age of the columns, they were not in bad condition - their long lives perhaps being due to the thick walls of the steel pipe used in their production.

A mid-1990s' Hy-Lite HL4N photocell was fitted to this lantern.

An integrally-geared Philips MA 50 135 Watt SOX lantern was fitted to the following column.

A Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell was fitted to this lantern.

There was then a brief return to a remotely-geared Alpha 4.

A length of insulation tape had been applied around the front section of this lantern; clearly, the bowl clips were not performing their job correctly!

Newer columns, again supporting MA 50s, made up the next few outgoing installations.

There was no direct replacement for the next installation:

A close-up of the lantern reveals that two of the facing bowl clips are not correctly secured to the lantern body.

A replacement column was installed alongside the next installation, however.

This lantern was fitted with a Zodion SS3DR photocell.

A rather excessive setup existed for the nearby illuminated sign. Two 'long' twin 8 Watt fluorescent signlights were employed to illuminate two 450 mm diameter 40 mph repeater plates. The right-hand signlight unit appears to be the older of the two, and looking at its bracket attachment to the post, there may once have been another signlight and bracket fitted; later being replaced by the Pearce Gowshall signlight and pop-over bracket. Notice that a new wide-based post has been installed adjacent this one; there is no requirement for repeater signs to be illuminated, so I am rather surprised to see this installed.

The next columns had also supported MA 50s until mid-late 2003, when Philips 'Trafficvision' SGS 306 lanterns were installed in its place; following the installation of traffic signals on the adjacent roundabout. No, there hasn't been a spate of bicycle murders in this area.

The Trafficvisions incorporate flat-glass covers, instead of the slightly more common polycarbonate bowls.

Once again, the new column was positioned alongside the old at this location.

A SELC 841 photocell was fitted to this lantern - these cells are uncommon in Derby.

A general view of the junction, showing a few more columns that are set to disappear for this scheme. By the time that these photographs were taken, the Haldo Ecco bollards and baselight units had already been replaced with Simmonsigns Simbol bollards with Global baselights.

Well, that's quite easily the longest PFI-write up I have produced over the course of this entire project. If you have made it to this point, award yourself a pat on the back for sticking with my ramblings!
