Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract
Uttoxeter Road, Mickleover (Part Four)
The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 2nd April 2011.
Two flange-plate Petitjean sheet steel columns were installed on the bridge over the A38 dual carriageway. Both supported remotely-geared Thorn Alpha 4 135 Watt SOX lanterns. At the time of writing, there were no markings sprayed on the footway to indicate what would happen to these columns, although the likelihood is that they will be replaced eventually.
The Alpha 4s seemed to suit the long, curved brackets that are often fitted to these columns.
The Petitjean name was embossed in the door of these columns; it is partially obscured here due to the presence of a 'Tamtorque' band securing the door to the column.
Looking back across the bridge, a 1990s' Fabrikat column supporting a 'medium' (SGS 253) Iridium can be seen on the right-hand side of the road. This used to support an integrally-geared Philips MA 50 135 Watt SOX lantern until alterations were made to the Western Road junction (over the bridge) in 2007/8. The 'direction ahead' sign in the foreground was replaced in 2010 due to heavy corrosion around the post's base. A Pearce Gowshall L68/25 twin 8 Watt fluorescent signlight was employed on the old post; a Simmonsigns LUA LED signlight is fitted to the new post.
A close-up of the Iridium; notice that the 150 Watt SON lamp appears more "in proportion" in this version of the Iridium than it perhaps does on the 'large' (SGS 254) version.
Two further Fabrikat columns followed; these retained their MA 50s.
Notice the 'ribs' in the bracket from when the curve was made in the pipe during manufacture.
A nearby 'no right turn' sign was up for replacement as part of this scheme. Although the new post is higher than the old post, it would be cut down slightly before the new signlight was fitted. At this point, the lighting columns returned to being 10 m sleeved Stanton concretes.
The lanterns fitted in this section are also remotely-geared Alpha 4s. Given the difference in lantern type in this section in comparison to the use of remotely-geared MA 50s seen on earlier pages, it is likely that one of the sections was relit some time before the other was.
The installation across the road was largely identical, right down to there being another 'no right turn' sign immediately in front of the column!
Surface rust was beginning to form on the sleeve brackets.
The replacement column here was sited slightly further away from the road (and a driveway) than its predecessor was.
The new columns are also 10 m in height, even though this example appears taller in this photograph:
A 'Tamtorque' band had also been fitted around the base of the following column.
The columns resorted to being tubular steel from the Rough Heanor Road / Corden Avenue junction down to the Royal Derby / City Hospital. For some reason, the lantern bowl and column door to this installation had a habit of working loose rather regularly.
A cable tie secured the bowl on this occasion, but the remnants of a previous repair using insulation tape can be seen on the rear bowl clip.
An integrally-geared 135 Watt SOX Alpha 4 also existed at the junction.
This too had had its bowl secured with insulation tape.
