Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Uttoxeter Road Service Road, Mickleover

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997:

Seq. No. Lamp Number Location Lamp Type Watt Isolation Point
1 36498 OS NO 164 SXPL3 35
2 36499 OS NOS 172/174 SXPL2 35
3 36500 O/S NOS 180/182 SXPL2 35

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 2nd April 2011. Unlike the adjacent Uttoxeter Road, the service road is only very short.

The three outgoing installations were largely identical - all consisted of 5 m sleeved Stanton 7 concrete columns supporting Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lanterns.

As the number of columns along this road increased due to the PFI scheme, not all of the new columns were installed alongside an outgoing equivalent. The ground around the outgoing column in the foreground had already been excavated by the time that these photographs.

A (possibly original) mid-1990s' Hy-Lite HL4N photocell was fitted to this lantern.

Peering into the excavation reveals the old lead-lined service cable entering via the normally-underground opening beneath the base compartment.

The third and final outgoing column along this road had been numbered twice - firstly, in the normal place - on the column shaft just above the base, and secondly, on the actual sleeve itself. The adjacent rhododendron bush is likely to be the reason behind this - the lower number was partially obscured by foliage, so placing a second number above the canopy probably helped the column to be located when repairs to it were required.
