The following photographs were taken on Thursday, 8th April 2010, unless otherwise stated.
The first column from Acacia Avenue supported a GEC Z5698U fitted with a Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell. The column is leaning in the photographs, and did since 2003, although back then, the lean was more severe. Owing to the tiny amount of space available for installing a column between the two driveways, the outgoing column was to be removed at the same time that the replacement was to be installed. (Note the "In/Out" marking on the carriageway.) This installation was eventually replaced during the week commencing Monday, 26th April 2010.
The next column, again supporting a Z5698U, was on the footpath leading to Stretton Close and Kipling Drive. The height difference between the new and old columns is very apparent here.
Back on the carriageway, the next column originally supported a Z5698U, but during my Derby City Council work experience, on Wednesday, 14th May 2003, this Thorn Beta 5 and small outreach bracket were fitted. The Z5698U was saved into the Collection, and the Beta 5's reflector marked with "JPS / MB - 14/05/03" in yellow ink. Amazingly, this marking just about survived the seven years of use that the lantern eventually saw.
While it is not shown on the above inventory records, this column was fed and switched from one of the other columns on this road.
By Wednesday, 21st April 2010, the above outgoing installation had been disconnected from its supply cable, and the new column connected. This was confirmed by the rather empty-looking base of the outgoing column, together with the dayburning Iridium on the new column! The photographs below were taken on the same date. Owing to the Beta 5's known history, I was keen that this lantern should be preserved for posterity, and so, the following day, the lantern was removed from the decommissioned column, and returned to the Balfour Beatty offices until such times as I could collect it. The dayburning Iridium was also rectified at the same time.
Pictures of the lantern can be seen here.
Curiously, the Lucy MC040 cut-out in the outgoing column had been installed upside-down in the column base, back when the column was new and supported a GEC post-top lantern!
An additional column was installed on the cul-de-sac for the PFI:
Another column with a slight lean was installed at the other entrance to the footpath. A Thorn Gamma 6 was fitted, but this column would also have originally supported a Z5698U...I didn't have anything to do with this lantern's demise, however!
Just visible to the right of the column base is a newly-installed miniature feeder pillar. I assume that this will eventually provide a supply to the column that replaces the column fitted with the Beta 5, when the Gamma 6's column is removed.
