Simmonsigns Invinca

Signlight acquired in February 2019.

This internally-illuminated signlight is unused but seems to have been surplus after the completion of some signing works. The 'Invinca' name is a play on the word 'invincible' - a nod to the apparent high durability of these fittings.

This particular Invinca features a 450 mm (1 ft 5.7 inches) × 300 mm (11.8 inches) 'One Way' graphic to Diagram 652 of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions.

The sign is designed for mounting to the top of a 76 mm (3 inch) post.

The rear section of the Invinca is die-cast aluminium, while the rest of the fitting is made of toughened plastic. Two tri-head bolts hold the two sections together. A Royce Thompson Microstar 2000 miniature photocell rated at 35 Lux is incorporated into the rear casting.

The front section of the fitting hinges open, allowing access to the internal wiring.

The identification label (attached on the inside frame of the illuminated area) includes the date that the fitting was manufactured - the 5th February 2013.

Four LEDs provide the required illumination onto the sign graphic; however, judging by the blank fixing holes, this gear tray can accommodate up to twelve LEDs, depending on the size of the sign being illuminated. Oddly, the details relating to the operating voltage and wattage have been blacked out in pen.

Undoing the two nylon nuts allows the gear tray to be removed, in order for the supply cable to be passed into the fitting. This allows the LED driver, the series wiring of the LEDs and the rear of the photocell to be seen.

The Invinca was fitted to a dedicated wall bracket designed to accommodate a 76 mm post-top spigot on Friday, 7th June 2019.

When powered up, the sign diagram appeared very uniformly-lit; a crucial requirement for internally-illuminated signage.

Testing with my energy monitoring device revealed the following results:

Test Voltage (V) Current being drawn at full power (A) Measured wattage (W) Apparent Power (VA) Frequency (Hz) Power Factor True Power (W) Difference to rated wattage Percentage Difference
248.9 0.03 6 7 49.9 0.92 6.87 -1.13 -14.13%
