Thorn Gamma 6 - Restoration and Reassembly

Column 60457 was finally removed on, or around, Friday, 23rd April 2010. Naturally, I was rather upset to see it gone; the patched-up excavation hole was the only evidence that a column had ever been installed there.

In the meantime, the exterior aluminium components were undergoing a much-needed repaint. This work was completed by Tuesday, 4th May 2010.

The greatest improvement was to the lantern's canopy. When removed, most of the black paint had worn away, exposing the aluminium beneath.

The opportunity was taken to refresh the paint on the inside of the canopy as well.

While not painted, the inside of the base casting was cleaned up.

Its exterior was repainted, however. The rubber disc that fits within the spigot cap was removed during the repainting.

One of my miniature columns was refurbished and numbered - column 60457 lives on, albeit in a much shorter form than it used to be!

The following animation documents the reassembly of the Gamma 6; undertaken on Saturday, 8th May:

I have attempted to make the lantern face the same direction it did when it was visible through my window. Seeing it power up again after ten years felt very strange indeed.

Lantern warm-up video:

Testing the fitting with my energy monitoring device revealed the following results:

Test Voltage (V) Current being drawn at full power (A) Measured wattage (W) Apparent Power (VA) Frequency (Hz) Power Factor True Power (W)
237.1 0.37 64 88 49.9 0.73 64.04

Following the lantern's restoration, it was briefly returned to the footpath where it had once reigned supreme...

Never being one to shy away from a photograph opportunity, I then joined the lantern in the publicity shots; in doing so, a GEC Z5698U was also inadvertently 'installed' at this location for the first time in approximately twelve years!

Apologies for the lack of a Hippeastrum plant in this photograph!
