211H. Off Ormond Road, Northgate, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk Located on the footpath that passes behind the houses is a 10 ft (3 m) fluted cast iron column with a Revo top-entry swan neck and later Thorn Beta 5 lantern, for 35 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamps. The installation is much the same as the example seen further down the footpath is, at the end of Nursery Terrace, except that the Beta 5's bowl is missing.
There are many of these cast iron columns installed on the rear footpaths, which make a combined warren of access routes. Given that these columns would (in all likelihood) have supported gas lanterns originally, activating all of these manually every evening (and deactivating them the following morning) would have been quite a time-consuming procedure for a lamplighter.
The lantern's aluminium canopy is painted the same light blue as the rest of the column structure is. The lamp appears very worn, and probably doesn't work any longer.
Oddly, there doesn't appear to be any lamp control gear installed within the lantern, although there must be, as there is nowhere else on the column that the gear could be situated.
