214F. Beacon Close, Crowborough, East Sussex With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Installed approximately half way along this cul-de-sac is a 1930s' Revo 'Woolwich' cast iron column supporting a swan neck bracket and two-way ESLA 'Bi-Multi' lantern. Formerly, additional identical examples existed along the road, and these were still extant in 2011, but by 2024, only this single example remained on the public road, owing to LED replacements. One column in private ownership did gain a swan neck bracket and four-way ESLA during the same time period, however.
The installation is likely to date from when the road was constructed, and is in excellent condition for its age.
Google Street View imagery taken in 2011 shows that this lantern ran an elliptical discharge lamp of some repute at the time (possibly, a self-ballasting mercury vapour (MBFT) type), but by the time that these new images were captured, a compact fluorescent lamp was in place instead. Helpfully, whoever fitted this lamp has written the date that they installed it (November 2017) on the base section.
Aside from some minor loss of reflectance, the mirror facets are some of the best that I have ever seen.
Unlike other Revo column designs, the Woolwich is relatively plain at base level.
The green paint finish applied to the column helps to camouflage it against the natural green backdrop.
The swan neck appears to be an ESLA product too, with the finial decoration being an ESLA style - the individual spikes are larger on the equivalent Revo product.
The four-way ESLA is installed within the front garden of an adjacent property, and rather splendid it looks too!
Ordinarily, four-way versions would be installed overlooking crossroad junctions, making them somewhat rarer than their two-way counterparts - not that these are exactly ten-a-penny these days either!
