214G. Grange Close, Crowborough, East Sussex With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Three Concrete Utilities' Byway 'X' 15 ft (5 m) concrete columns exist along this cul-de-sac, with two of these supporting Simplex Solumbra post-top lanterns (the third column was positioned near trees, and the lantern couldn't be seen) running an unknown lamp type and wattage.
The first of the concrete columns is to be found near the junction with Beacon Road.
The road looks to date from the late 1970s or early 1980s, and these lanterns would be contemporary with that period.
The road divides into two sections, forming a T shape. At either end of the two branches, the other columns are located. This is not a particularly efficient system of lighting the road, particularly with lanterns that rely on the reflectance generated by adjacent buildings for light distribution, but may have been the only places to install columns, depending on exactly where the adopted highway boundary lies.
A crack exists in this lantern's GRP canopy.
