214E. Saxonbury Close, Crowborough, East Sussex With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Located near to the junction of Croft Road is a 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' Byway 'X' column supporting a GEC ZD10598 post-top lantern, which would have run an 80 - 125 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp when new, but now may run an LED equivalent lamp instead. The ZD10598 is one of the rarer post-tops in the GEC range, although it is similar in appearance to the Z567# series; the only differences being that the ZD features a securing thumbscrew on top of the canopy, as well as a different patterning to the bowl.
Every column on this road was topped with a ZD10598 originally, with wide canopy Thorn Gamma 6s being used for casual replacements at a couple of positions later. By 2024, this was the only column to remain in original condition; all others having had LED lanterns fitted.
Curiously, the bowl plastic is of a similar 'frosted' appearance to that employed on the later 2000 series post-top range from WRTL / Industria - in a strange twist of fate, the last remnants of GEC's street lighting lantern range would end up being produced by WRTL by the 1990s anyway.
The bowl patterning is best appreciated with the lantern in silhouette. Also in this view, the GEC logo is visible on the rear casting, though the letters are arranged vertically, rather than the usual horizontal positioning.
