222B. Off Knowle Lane, Cranleigh, Waverley, Surrey Situated on an access road behind the Stocklund Square group of shops are six 25 ft (8 m) Stewarts & Lloyds tubular steel columns, all of which still (in April 2025) support their original GEC Z8430CM lanterns, for 250 - 400 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamps. These installations are likely to date from around 1965, as the land now occupied by Stocklund Square was all part of Cranleigh Railway Station, which closed in June that year - the access road being constructed on the station's former track bed.
The first column to be pictured is positioned at a right-angled bend in the road, and leads to an adjacent car park. One of the lights for this is visible in the background; these columns also supported Z8430CMs originally, but today, LED lanterns are fitted instead.
Fairly lengthy outreach brackets are supplied, complete with the characteristic Stewarts & Lloyds cranked pipe work, and triangular support webbing beneath.
The Z8430CMs are all in remarkable condition; their glass bowls being undamaged and relatively clean.
The columns too look to be in good shape for their age - no major rusting is present.
What looks to be part of the internal asbestos-sheathed wiring is visible inside this lantern.
The combination of this column style and lantern makes for a classic appearance.
An elliptical lamp is visible within the lantern. Some minor impact damage appears to have occurred to the bowl here.
I had to take this picture looking straight up at the lantern as the adjacent tree prevented it from being seen easily from the same side-on profile from which the other images were taken.
This does, however, allow the underside of the bowl to be appreciated.
The penultimate installation is seen from Knowle Lane itself.
The GEC logo is (just) visible in the front-centre of the lantern's canopy.
The final column was another with heavy tree encroachment.
While the lantern was still visible when pictured, it would disappear into the branches once the tree was in full leaf again.
The door to this column was slightly misaligned, allowing this wonderful vintage GEC Z1869X 250 Watt MBF ballast to be seen.
