222C. High Street, Bramley, Waverley, Surrey With thanks to Louis Cunningham for informing me of these Survivors. Attached to a building that is located opposite Windrush Close is a rather Heath-Robinson looking top-entry wall bracket supporting a lantern from GEC's Z5590 range. The bracket is pressed against the building, although it may originally have overhung the carriageway itself, before being moved to its present position to avoid potential collisions with high-sided vehicles passing along the High Street. If this is the case, the bracket has been in the present position since 2008 (at least). A modern 'heritage' column exists on the opposite side of the road, suggesting that the Z5590 is disused anyway. Further along the High Street is a 15 ft (5 m) tubular steel column made by Stewarts & Lloyds that supports another GEC product - a post-top lantern from the Z5670 series.

The electricity supply to the Z5590 bracket passes up the building's wall in steel conduit before terminating in a cast iron enclosure that houses (presumably) the fuse, relay and base for the two-part photocell, and any control gear required to run the lamp. On the outgoing side of this enclosure, a portion of the cabling is hidden behind the sign for the restaurant that occupies the building.

The bracket comprises a section of 3/4" BSP pipe bent at two right angles, and strengthened using an internal bar positioned diagonally, which carries some decorative scrollwork.

The Z5590's bowl is too discoloured and grubby to determine if any lamp remains within it, or indeed, what that lamp might be. The detector for a Zodion SS54 two-part photocell is visible on the lantern's aluminium canopy.

The box cover features an entwined double B logo - it is possibly a Barnard and Buecheler product; this company was based in Sunningdale, Berkshire, although little else is known of their history.

If the lantern does still work, any users to this upstairs room will not need to use the room's own light after nightfall!

This view demonstrates the relatively narrow footway on this side of the road. The road itself is not especially wide, and a shorter, less elaborate wall bracket would have sufficed here.

The Z5670 is located at the junction of High Street and Park Drive.

Something rather dramatic has happened to the lantern's Perspex bowl, causing a large melt mark and hole to be present in the plastic. I suspect that the lampholder must have detached somehow, causing the lamp to press against the plastic.
