224. Swindon Road, Stratton Saint Margaret, Swindon, Wiltshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of these Survivors. Situated within a BOC Gas depot are two GEC ZP1000 25 ft (8 m) concrete columns supporting Z9454 90 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lanterns. As the depot also has newer floodlighting equipment, these two lights may have become disused. In the past, the site looks to have been more expansive, with a third column (not pictured here) belonging to a separate business having lost its bracket and lantern to newer floodlights too.
The first of the two columns is visible from Swindon Road itself.
Evidence of spalling exists at both ends of the bracket, with slight cracks also forming around the top of the column.
The SOX lamp is visible within this lantern.
The second column is at the rear of the depot site, and is accessed via Pigeon House Lane.
The bracket emerges from the trees - the column being hidden by foliage, with its base being covered in ivy.
The empty space above the lamp confirms that this is the Z9454, with the control gear installed remotely. Had the gear been installed within the lantern, the part code would then be Z9464.
This bracket also shows signs of spalling towards the column end.
Unusually, the underside of the bowl is clear, and free of refractors. This allows the GE (no relation to GEC)-made SOX lamp to be seen clearly.
Zooming out reveals the small amount of bracket and column that are visible.
