224A. Off Lime Kiln, Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire With thanks to Dwight for informing me of this Survivor. Located at the entrance to the former car park of the Manor House is a 15 ft (5 m) Concrete Utilities' Byway column and bracket combination supporting an ELECO HW-852 lantern. At the time of photographing in August 2024, the Manor House building was undergoing considerable renovation, and in all likelihood, the installation will probably be removed as part of this work. Already, the supply to it had been disconnected, and the base compartment left with the inspection door removed. This did, however, allow me to spot the lamp control gear, and determine that the lantern ran an 80 Watt MBF (mercury vapour) lamp when in use.

This appears to have been the only column installed on the car park - the rest of the area being lit with floodlights attached to the building.

The lantern's Perspex bowl has become translucent with age, and slightly grubby, but is otherwise intact.

A vertical structural crack exists in the rear section of the column. The discarded door is visible bottom-right in this picture.

Given that the surrounding area appears to be being prepared for new surfacing, this installation may have been pictured just in time.

The lantern is slightly misaligned on its bracket, although with the bowl being as it is, it would only ever produce 'area' lighting these days anyway, rather than on a dedicated beam through the prismatic glass refractor that surrounds the lamp.

Peering through the security fence allows the gear components to be seen within the base compartment.

The Philips L4080BX ballast looks to be in good condition, despite the disuse.

The capacitor carries the date code '6918' (highlighted in yellow below), meaning that it was made between the 28th April and the 4th May in 1969.
