Botchergate, Currock, Carlisle, Cumberland, Cumbria Attached to the County Hotel building, which is a short distance away from The Crescent junction, is a Thorn Alpha 3 lantern with integral lamp control gear. This particular example runs a SON-T (tubular high pressure sodium) lamp - probably 250 Watt - although 400 Watt options existed too, as well as MBF (mercury vapour) versions in these wattages also. The lantern is likely to have become superseded by a new 10 m heritage style tubular steel column supporting a generic teardrop lantern that is installed a short distance away.
Google Street View imagery captured in April 2009 shows that, even then, the Alpha 3 had been displaced by the new installation, and the column certainly looked to have been in place for some time by the time that this imagery was produced.
The imagery also confirms that the Alpha 3's bowl was still extant in September 2014, but had been lost by June the following year. With the bowl now having gone missing, a very worn SON-T lamp is revealed within the lantern.
The photocell is possibly a Horstmann T14 type, which may be original to when the lantern was installed in the 1980s.
