Off South Worple Way, Mortlake, London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames With thanks to 'Jo' for informing me of this Survivor. Attached to a pedestrian footbridge that passes over the Kingston Loop railway line, allowing access to North Worple Way, is a short steel pipe that supports a Revo swan neck bracket and the remains of an unidentified top-entry lantern, which bears a slight resemblance to the Metropolitan-Vickers 'Aldwych' / Wardle 'Arran' lantern design. Judging by the installation's derelict state, it has probably not worked for many years (even in 2008, it was still in the same condition); its low height making it a potential victim of vandalism.
The installation is to be found at the corner of the footbridge.
Much of the paint applied to the bracket has worn away over time.
A length of asbestos wiring hangs out of the open lantern - its shape somewhat resembling that of the glass teardrop bowl that would once have existed.
The steel pole supporting the bracket and lantern is attached to the coping stones on top of the brickwork that forms the bridge structure.
The street lighting column behind the disused installation supports two lanterns (Philips Mini Luma LED products) at differing heights, allowing the staircase to be lit after nightfall, serving the purpose that this rather sad-looking installation once fulfilled.
An intact porcelain two-pin bayonet lampholder survives within the cast iron lantern body, suggesting that the lantern ran a single GLS (incandescent tungsten filament) lamp when in use.
The bolt securing the fuse box cover was loose, allowing the insides of the box to be seen. As well as the fuse carrier, the base section for a Venner time switch is visible.
With the lid closed over, the 'Revo - Tipton' writing that is cast into the lid can be seen.
The terraced houses of Queen's Road form a background to this installation.
A small circular boss is positioned on top of the lantern's dome-like canopy.
On the northern side of the bridge, an 8 m Abacus tubular steel column supporting a Thorn Beta 79 was to be seen. This column may have been a replacement for a second bridge-mounted light at some point in the past.
The Beta 79's GRP (Glass-Reinforced Plastic) canopy is filthy, and seems to be shedding fibres quite vigorously. The bowl is also discoloured. This installation too is likely to have become disused.
