Shrewsbury Railway Station, The Dana, Greenfields, Shrewsbury, Shropshire With thanks to LeoLampposts for informing me of these Survivors. Located at the southern end of this station, near the very complex Severn Bridge Junction, along with its famous signal box, are a number of very short tubular steel columns on a staff footpath, many of which still support lanterns designed for running two 2 ft (600 mm) T12-sized 40 Watt MCF/A (linear fluorescent) lamps; the most notable of the selection probably being an AEI 'Residential', dating from the early 1960s. The other notable lanterns comprise GEC Z8260s, which are likely to be a little newer, and became something of British Rail's standard outdoor lantern for illuminating small areas such as footpaths, as seen here, sidings, platforms, etc..

The Residential is the most northerly of these installations.

Even when standing as far south along the platforms as is permitted, the lanterns are still quite a distance away - fortunately, this posed little problem for my camera's zoom lens.

Whereas the Residential's column is fixed, and cannot be lowered for maintenance, the columns to which the Z8260s are attached are Abacus base-hinged types - a very common sight throughout the British railway network.

Whilst the lamps are still visible within this Z8260, the likelihood of these lanterns remaining in nightly operation regularly is very low nowadays.

The lower of the two lamps in the second Z8260 is completely worn out - this lantern won't work in its present state, even if switched on.
