Roushill Bank, Mountfields, Frankwell, Shrewsbury, Shropshire With thanks to LeoLampposts for informing me of these Survivors. Unusually, two older installations are seen in close proximity to one another here. Installed on a wall bracket at a rather high position on a building housing a bank is a Philips MI 80, dating from the 1980s, and intended for running a 55 Watt SOX (low pressure sodium) lamp. Philips also sold the MI 80 as a 'Kombipak' version, with a wall bracket and photocell included, which was named the SXK 55 instead, and so this example might well be labelled as such. Separately, a doorless cast iron fuse / gear box exists further down the wall, with a rather weathered Philips L4054 ballast still being visible within it. Although this ballast was intended for running a 35 - 55 Watt SOX lamp, the MI 80 / SXK 55 was sold with the lamp control gear installed within the lantern ordinarily, so the presence of both items together could be purely coincidental or not.
The lantern may have been installed at this position to provide illumination over a cash machine that used to exist further down the wall; presumably, the heritage-style wall-mounted lanterns installed opposite did not exist when the machine was installed.
Although a lamp still appears to exist within the lantern, the photocell is missing, allowing rainwater to enter, and then become trapped within the bowl.
A length of the conduit that formerly supported the supply cable to the box remains extant.
The box looks almost too old for this style of ballast, though if it is an AC Ford product, even their more recent enclosures were little changed from equivalent products produced decades earlier. Equally, as the current bank building dates to 1968, the box may also date from then, and re-used to accommodate this newer ballast when the time arose.
Much of the text has worn away from the ballast's stamp these days, though the part code is still visible.
