The following list details the inventory records for the entire road, as they appeared in 1997. There are no items listed for Sequence Nos. 1, 38, 39 41 and 42, and the location given for 91283 is not a mistake on my part...

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 12th February 2011.

A remotely-geared Thorn Alpha 4 135 Watt SOX lantern fitted to a 10 m tubular steel column was first from Warwick Avenue. Also attached to this column were a couple of Truesigns T8P/54 signlight units.

One glance at the Alpha 4's canopy revealed that the lantern had seen many years' use. The new column's spigot appears to be designed to support bracketry, rather than a post-top, spigot-mounted lantern.

Two further remotely-geared Alpha 4s followed; both were situated on the opposite side of the road to the first example.

This column also supported a couple of Road Signs Franco RS104 T8 signlights. The lantern's photocell may have been wired to also switch these units, as they were not operating during the day, as many fluorescent signlights in Derby were. Both fittings are missing their glazing panels, and the left-hand example has lost its securing bolt.

The replacement column for this installation was situated away from adjacent overhanging tree branches.

Several replacement columns had been installed along Burton Road in the mid-2000s. All supported Holophane Syracuse Medium (QSM) lanterns. These columns were also due to be replaced as part of this scheme.

The section of the road that saw the highest pedestrian and traffic movements (due to the proximity of shops) was lit with integrally-geared Thorn Alpha 3 lanterns attached to 10 m columns. The Alpha 3s ran a mixture of 250 Watt and 400 Watt SON lamps. Light levels along this part of Burton Road must, therefore, have been colossal; given the nominal column height. The replacement column is installed directly 'behind' the outgoing column in the photograph below; making it difficult to see. Earlier in the day, the new column was leaning slightly; its excavation hole awaiting filling. This had been rectified by the time that the pictures were taken.

The lowest portion of an Alpha 3's bowl often collects detritus, which, when exposed to the heat from a 250 Watt or 400 Watt lamp, soon becomes rather 'barbecued'! The dirt can enter the lantern through the narrow gap between the canopy and the shoe, especially if the sealing gasket has perished.

Only one of the new columns had been fitted with a lantern at the time of photographing.

This is the 'large' (SGS 254) version of the Iridium. The lamp looks to be 150 Watt SON-T. The photocell fitted is a Royce Thompson SC1000; designed to switch the lamp on at 35 Lux, and off at 18 Lux.

Another Syracuse Medium was installed on the side of the pedestrian crossing. Although not obvious here, the lantern was orientated slightly to the right of being perpendicular with the footway.

This was then followed by a further three Alpha 3s.

Another column supporting a Syracuse Medium was next.

This Alpha 3's bowl had been secured using a length of insulation tape.

The mark made by a previous tape repair was visible on the underside of the bowl. The plastic appears rather scratched; probably as a result of many bowl cleans over the years.

The shiny aluminium canopies still sparkled in the winter sunlight.
