Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Duffield Road, Allestree (Adjacent "Palm Court" Roundabout)

Much of Duffield Road had already been relit by June 2011; however, the old lighting still remained at either end. Therefore, the inventory list for this page only details the illuminated equipment that was set for removal as part of this scheme. The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997:

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 11th June 2011.

Looking towards the Palm Court Roundabout, we see several examples of the typical lanterns that were installed along this section of Duffield Road - all ran a 135 Watt SOX lamp.

The new lanterns run 150 Watt SON-T lamps.

Several integrally-geared, gear-in-lantern Philips MA 50 lanterns were installed along here. This particular lantern's front bowl clip was not correctly fastened at the time of photographing.

Some of the older columns supported bracketry that suggested they may have supported twin-lamp Atlas Alpha 8 lanterns when new.

This GEC/OSRAM Z9554M (or WRTL MRL 135) on the roundabout was the only example of its kind. Given that it was also the only lantern to be supported by a CU Phosco tubular steel column, it was probably a later replacement.

Two more MA 50s were doomed here.

These versions were of the integrally-geared, gear-in-shoe variety.

Two different generations of MA 50 can be seen below; the left-hand example is older.

This early remotely-geared MA 50 sported a narrow rear shoe. Philips would later redesign the rear section in order to make it shallower.

Owing to the width of the road at this point, the columns (new and old) were installed in an opposite arrangement. Another MA 50 can be seen on the left; on the right is the Relite Hyperion 135 previously photographed for Survivor from the Past Article 51B.

Archival photographs suggest that the Hyperion 135s were already extant by 1971, and there more of them back then. Fast-forward forty years, and only two remained; both looking slightly the worst for wear.

The MA 50's GRP canopy looked somewhat weathered in the June sunlight.

The second Hyperion column was virtually identical to the first.

This close-up photograph reveals the need to wrap the rear section of the bowl in insulation tape - one of the hinges was damaged.

The opposite column here also supported an MA 50.

The illuminated bollards had already been replaced at the time of photographing.

There was no direct replacement for this column.
