Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Foresters Way was constructed in the early 1980s, following the closure and subsequent demolition of the Normanton Barracks in 1981, which had previously occupied the site - the road being named after the Sherwood Foresters army regiment that formerly trained there. The table below details the lighting along this road as it appeared in 1997.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 19th September 2015.

The columns installed along this road are 8 m in height, with most supporting 90 Watt SOX lanterns. A couple of Thorn Alpha 4s can be seen here.

The original lanterns were Thorn Alpha 9s; the Alpha 4s being used as replacements.

The Alpha 9s are integrally-geared; the ballast, ignitor and capacitor being accommodated in the space above the lamp.

This example is installed on the section of road that bifurcates the Showcase Cinema from its vast car park.

This lantern is fitted with a Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux photocell.

Another Alpha 4 followed.

A Royce Thompson Monostar 1000 70 Lux photocell controls this lantern.

Alpha 9s surround the small roundabout at the end of the road.

Notice the two slightly different bracket designs for these two columns.

The column immediately opposite was leaning slightly. This view demonstrates how much of the Alpha 9 is empty space.
