Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Heron Way, Mickleover

This road was constructed in the mid-1980s, and much of the current system of lighting also dates from then. I was surprised that this estate was not relit as part of the mass-replacement work in the early years of the PFI, as roads of a similar age in Oakwood were. Still, at least this ensured that the road was in virtually as-built condition.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 19th September 2015.

An 8 m tubular steel column supporting a remotely-geared Philips MA 90 90 Watt SOX lantern was first from Rough Heanor Road. This installation appears to pre-date the construction of the houses on Heron Way.

The steelwork is discoloured through surface rust.

The detector for a Zodion SS55 two-part photocell can be seen attached to the lantern's canopy.

A 5 m column supporting a Philips MI 26 35 Watt SOX lantern marked the start of the 'new' housing.

The lantern was fitted with a Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux photocell.

The columns are made by Abacus, as evidenced by the company's name being embossed into the door.

Thorn Beta 5 lanterns were fitted to the majority of the columns on this road; these are probably the original lanterns, with the MI 26 above being a 1990s' replacement.

A small amount of dirt is visible in the lowest portion of the bowl.

These installations were replaced in October 2021; the video below shows them just before replacement, along with the lights on nearby Muirfield Drive:
