Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract - Muirfield Drive, Mickleover

This road was constructed in the mid-1980s, and the current system of lighting also dates from then. I was surprised that this estate was not relit as part of the mass-replacement work in the early years of the PFI, as roads of a similar age in Oakwood were. Still, at least this ensured that the road was in virtually as-built condition.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 19th September 2015.

Two 8 m tubular steel columns supporting Thorn Alpha 4 90 Watt SOX lanterns were seen at the approach to the road's junction with Uttoxeter Road.

A length of insulation tape had been wrapped around the rear of the lantern's bowl; perhaps one or both of the rear securing clips was broken.

After this, the road narrowed and the rest of the columns were 6 m in height.

The majority of the lanterns fitted to these columns were Thorn Beta 2 55 Watt SOX lanterns, most of which were original to when the columns were installed.

All but one of the column and brackets supporting a Beta 2 were made by Abacus, of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. The one exception to this was made by Fabrikat, of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire!

The lantern was fitted with a Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux photocell; the same as what was fitted to all of the other installations on this estate at the time of photographing.

Despite the majority of columns being Abacus products, there was considerable inconsistency in the style of brackets between different installations.

The installation below, and also the one directly behind it, were fitted with a curved bracket that fitted flush with the column spigot, for example.

This is the first column to be seen when entering the estate from Chain Lane.

A cable tie has been used to secure this lantern's bowl.

These installations were replaced in October 2021; the video below shows them just before replacement, along with the lights on nearby Heron Way:
