This first photograph was taken on Wednesday, 7th April 2010.
By pure coincidence, I encountered one of the HIAB trucks laden with new columns whilst planning this photograph page. I was interested to see that the columns were being carried down the footpath (one at a time) by a single workman.
The main photographs were taken a day later, on the Thursday.
A Thorn Gamma 6 was installed on the footpath/accessway to Bowland Close and Latrigg Close. This would have replaced a GEC Z5698U in the mid-1990s.
A Thorn Beta 79 running 70 Watt SON-T replaced a defective GEC Z9532 here on Tuesday, 12th October 2004:
Happily, the next two installations still retained their Z9532s, although a Royce Thompson SC1000 cell was fitted to the first example:
A Zodion SS3DR cell switched the second Z9532:
Another Gamma 6 marked the start of the adjacent footpath. A Z5698U was originally installed here as well, but was replaced in late 2003. This lantern was saved into the Collection after its column was removed; see here for details.
Yet another Gamma 6 was installed on the following column; again, a GEC Z5698U used to be installed here until January 1995, when it was replaced. This Z5698U seemed to be particularly prone to being the victim of pranks; perhaps from late-night revellers on their way home from the pub. On one occasion, a traffic cone was placed on the lantern's canopy, and on another, the canopy was unclipped and then opened - this is perhaps why the Gamma 6 was eventually fitted here!
Returning to the main carriageway now, and at the Acacia Avenue junction, a column supporting a Thorn Beta 5 could be seen. This replaced another Z9532, again in about 2003.
Three further Z9532s remained past the Beta 5:
The new column was positioned very close to the outgoing installation here:
Another Beta 5 (albeit with a deep bowl) existed on the footpath leading to Latrigg Close; this replaced a Z5698U in early 2003. (2003 wasn't a particularly kind year to the lighting on Hindscarth Crescent, was it!) A small outreach bracket was fitted to the column in order for the side-entry Beta 5 to be accommodated. Notice that the lamp is unsupported within the lantern - as far as I know, this was always the case - the lamp support ring must have been omitted when this lantern was being assembled.
