1 | 30114 | OPP MIDLAND BANK | SXPL3 | 35
2 | 30115 | ADJ 6 SOUTH CT | SXPL3 | 35

The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 18th April 2010, during the temporary cessation of many flights as a result of the volcanic ash cloud passing over much of Britain and Europe at the time. The complete lack of vapour trails in the sky was something of an unfamiliar sight!
The first new column was positioned closer to the Uttoxeter Road junction than its outgoing equivalent. Incidentally, the 10 m Stanton concrete column in the background is fitted with an SGS 254 Iridium; this replaced a smashed Philips MA 50 in 2009.
The outgoing column was installed on a raised section of footway adjacent the derelict garage site. The sleeved Stanton 7 column supported a Thorn Beta 5 lantern; installed in the 1990s.
Industrial decline at its best:
Moving further down the road, another Beta 5 was due for removal, however, this one was attached to a tubular steel column (visible in the background):
The setup was repeated again for the third and final installation. Whilst not indicated on the above inventory records, this column was the control and switching point for a series of Housing Association-owned Crompton Churchouse 50 Watt SON bollards in the adjacent Madeley Court. I know this because the cell fitted to the Beta 5 developed a fault in approximately 2004, which caused the lantern, and the bollards, to dayburn until a replacement cell was fitted. The final cell fitted to the Beta 5 was a Royce Thompson SC1000 - perhaps fitted during a 'Clean and Change' session. The feed for the bollards was not transferred to the new column; instead, a miniature feeder pillar was installed (just visible in the footway adjacent the outgoing column), and the supply transferred into that.
An interesting installation in one of the Housing Association car parks just off Limes Avenue consists of a Thorn Gamma 5 lantern attached to a 5 m Thorn aluminium column. This installation was not due to be removed under the PFI, but is pictured here anyway. The Gamma 5 is fitted with a rather dim mercury lamp, although it is rather unnecessary these days due to the additional attachment of a couple of SONPak floodlights to the column shaft. Nevertheless, all three fittings still operate on a nightly basis.
