Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Sinfin Avenue, Shelton Lock (Part Two)

The following photographs were taken on Friday, 24th December 2010.

A 6 m column supporting a GEC Z9538 lantern was installed opposite Hoveton Close.

At this point, the outgoing columns reduced in height from 6 m to 5 m, and supported Philips MI 26 35 Watt SOX lanterns. When new, these columns may have supported 80 Watt MBF lanterns. The new columns on this section also reduce in height - from 8 m down to the nonstandard column height of 7 m. The road narrows at this point; hence the reduction in height.

This Thorn Beta 5 would have replaced a faulty MI 26 at some point.

This elderly Stewart & Lloyd 15 ft column was installed directly below overhead electricity transmission wires (as seen in the wide shot above). There is no direct replacement for this column - two new columns are spaced either side of the lines.

The road then widens again; necessitating the use of taller columns. Most of these columns (also made by Stewart & Lloyd) ended their days fitted with Philips MI 36 55 Watt SOX lanterns, but may also have once supported MBF lanterns. If they did, the wattage is likely to have been 125 Watt.

Thorn Beta 2s were used where MI 36s had failed. I couldn't help noticing that the adjacent pub car park was also lit with some classic fittings...

A length of wire had been twisted around the Beta 2 assembly, in order to secure the bowl.
