The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 4th and Sunday, 5th June 2011:

A 25 ft Stewart & Lloyd column supporting a Thorn Alpha 8 150 Watt SON-T lantern was first from Saint Peter's Street. Until at least 2006, this column supported a remotely-geared Thorn Alpha 3 lantern, running a 250 Watt SON-E lamp. Prior to this, an Atlas Alpha 3 had been fitted. Visible in the background is a vintage sign advertising 'Thurman and Malin'; this firm was founded in 1879 by John Thurman and William Malin, and was, in its heyday, something of a rival to the famous Midland Drapery. The building was constructed in the early years of the 20th Century. The firm ceased trading in 1970.

The inside of the Alpha 8's bowl was surprisingly quite grubby.

A temporary supply had been taken (from or to) the column (to or from) an adjacent signpost supporting a twin 8 Watt fluorescent Simmonsigns 'LUA' signlight unit. The foreground signpost supported a couple of Pearce Gowshall L68/25 signlights. The unusual design of the signposts are the result of a pedestrianisation scheme in the mid-1990s.

This close-up of the temporary supply connection at the column also reveals that this column still supported a porcelain insulator for a much earlier overhead supply.

An identical setup followed for the next outgoing column; I had previously photographed this installation when the Alpha 3 was still fitted. Although the new columns had been fitted at the time of photographing, they had not yet been fitted with lanterns; this was to follow.

By contrast, the lamp area of this Alpha 8 was much cleaner internally.

The next outgoing column was also of Stewart & Lloyd manufacture. A bracket with a longer outreach had been fitted here; presumably, to locate the lantern away from the adjacent overhanging tree branches. A Philips SGS 204 lantern, perhaps running 250 Watt SON-T, was fitted here.

The lantern was not exactly the cleanest example ever photographed!

Returning to shorter outreach brackets, and an integrally-geared Thorn Alpha 3 had been fitted.

This close-up reveals that the two bowl clips had had a length of wire threaded through them in order to keep them secured to the canopy during normal operation.

Lanterns had been fitted to the new columns by Sunday, 12th June 2011.

The 'medium' (SGS 253) version of the Iridium was used.
