The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 3rd April 2011:
Two remotely-geared Thorn Alpha 3 lanterns, each running 250 Watt SON, were installed in the 'No Vehicles' zone.
The Alpha 3s replaced twin-lamp Atlas Alpha 8 (or possibly, single-lamp Simplex Jupiter) lanterns in the late 1970s/early 1980s.
Back on the main traffic route, the ex-Z8526 columns now supported GEC Z9554M 135 Watt SOX lanterns.
There was a mixture of lanterns fitted with NEMA sockets and two-part cell detectors; this lantern is of the former type. |
Moving slightly further up the road, more Z9554Ms could be seen, as could a privately owned Abacus 25 ft base-hinged tubular steel column, supporting an Atlas Alpha 3 lantern. |
This Z9554M was fitted with a Zodion SS55 two-part cell detector. |
While we're here, let's take a closer look at that Alpha 3...photographs exist that show this installation in 1974 (although, it was relocated away from the road at some point after then), and yet, the lantern and its 250 Watt MBF lamp could easily be mistaken as having just been fitted, in the photograph below - it is obviously well maintained by its owner. For more information on this installation, please click here. |
This is the final outgoing column on this road; after this, the lighting had already been renewed when a roundabout linking Babington Lane, Lara Croft Way, Normanton Road, Burton Road, Mercian Way and Green Lane was constructed in 2010. |
The spigot entry in a Z9554M is clearly somewhat shorter than the previous lantern's spigot entry was - notice the long stepped section between the bracket and lantern. |
