Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Friar Gate, City Centre

The equipment being removed consisted of the following items in 1997. Since then, construction Derby's Inner Ring Road has been completed; meaning that not all items listed here were still extant by the time that the PFI scheme commenced.

The following photographs were taken on Sunday, 7th August 2011:

A Thorn Alpha 8 250 Watt SON lantern was first from Ashbourne Road. The reason behind the column's striped base is unknown; although painting the bases of lighting columns in this way was carried out during World War II, in order to aid visibility during the blackouts, the column was not this old. Perhaps, the column once carried Belisha Beacon apparatus, if a Zebra Crossing existed at this location in the past.

This close-up view reveals that the lantern's aluminium canopy showed signs of corrosion.

A slightly more angular column, again supporting an Alpha 8, followed. The replacement column for the above installation is installed adjacent the tree.

The bowl was missing from this example.

The replacement column here was set right back from the road.

The lantern appeared to be fitted with a 140 Watt CPO-TW lamp.

The next couple of outgoing columns were installed in close proximity to overhanging tree branches.

A newer, GRP-canopied Alpha 8 was fitted to this column.

This was followed by a return to aluminium-canopied examples for the next few installations.

This lantern was also missing its bowl, allowing the 250 Watt SON-T lamp to be seen in all its glory.

These two installations were first from the Bridge Street junction.

Heavy corrosion was present on this lantern's canopy. What looked to be a length of wire was wrapped around the rear of the lantern - presumably, the bowl on this lantern also had a habit of working loose in its later years!

Hanging bowls should not occur with the Iridium - its design ensures that this cannot happen.

Another Alpha 8 variant followed for the next column; this type still retained the aluminium gear shoe, but the canopy was now GRP in its construction, and the rather flimsy bowl clip had been replaced with the more substantial type seen on later versions of the Beta 5 and Beta 79.

A blue-cone Royce Thompson SC1000 photocell was fitted to this lantern.

A Siemens MRL 6 lantern was next.

Given that this lantern was also missing its bowl, it is possible that the bowls were moved deliberately, for re-use as spares on remaining examples of these lanterns.

The replacement column here was situated on the opposite side of the road.

One piece of electrical street furniture that was most definitely not up for replacement as part of this scheme was this 1893 cast iron 'transformer box', used, I believe to supply electricity to the tramlines that existed along this road. Only the Victorians could come up with such an ornate and elaborate design for something that would otherwise be fairly mundane.

The flat-glass Philips 'Trafficvision' lantern seen in the background of the above picture is seen again below:

Alongside was its modern equivalent.

This Alpha 8's bowl showed visible signs of dirt ingress, but at least it was still attached to the lantern!

A greater number of new columns were installed than there were old columns due for removal.

Aside from several marks on this Alpha 8's bowl, this example still looked relatively clean.

Surprisingly, so did the new Iridium installed nearby!

Another column supporting a Trafficvision existed alongside the Friar Gate railway bridge. Incidentally, the K6 Telephone Kiosk to the left of the picture carries a Grade II listing.

This lantern incorporated a polycarbonate bowl.
