Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract

Portland Close, Mickleover

A few years prior to the PFI commencing, Portland Close received new lighting as part of a larger scheme to relight the entire estate to the east of Station Road, and to the north of Uttoxeter Road. One installation, however, was not replaced as part of this scheme, or indeed, for the subsequent larger-scale PFI replacement work throughout the City. The table below provides details of the lighting that existed on Portland Close in 1997; the records in grey are those that were removed during the pre-PFI replacement scheme.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 19th September 2015.

This Stanton 10 concrete column supporting a Thorn Beta 5 35 Watt SOX lantern is one of the last concrete columns in Derby.

A Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux cell nowadays controls this lantern's operation; however, when pictured originally, it was switched by a mechanical Sangamo time switch located in the column base.
