The following photographs were taken on Thursday, 28th April 2011.

The section from the Palm Court roundabout to Broadway had been relit in May 2009; the videos detailing this scheme can be found at the end of this page. Two years later, the rest of the road was similarly relit. All but one of the outgoing installations along this part of the road consisted of integrally-geared Thorn Alpha 4 135 Watt SOX lanterns attached to Abacus 10 m tubular steel columns. By the time that they were removed, the Alpha 4s had served at least twenty-four years of service (as this photograph proves); however, the columns were older, and would have supported other lanterns originally. As with Burton Road, Littleover, it is possible that the columns were originally 8 m in height, but later saw their heights increased by means of extension brackets - the design of the columns on both roads is very similar.

The side-entry spigot reducer can be seen between the end of the bracket and the lantern in this installation.

All of the replacement columns were fitted with outreach brackets, due to the proximity of overhanging tree branches in many locations along the road.

These lanterns are the 'large' (SGS 254) version of the Iridium, and run 150 Watt SON-T lamps.

This view illustrates the difference in bracket design between the old and new columns.

I did mention that overhanging tree branches were present along this road, didn't I?

A small amount of debris had gathered in the lowest portion of this lantern's bowl.

The new columns are 11 m in height; the extra metre can clearly be seen here.

The outreach of the new brackets is slightly shorter than the outreach of the outgoing brackets.

The new lanterns feature curved glass bowls, and Royce Thompson SC1000 photocells that are set to switch on at 35 Lux.

By comparison, this Alpha 4 is fitted with a Monostar 1000 cell; set to switch on at 70 Lux.

The new lanterns, although not yet in use at the time of photographing, were all ready to be energised - the lamp can be seen within this lantern's optic.

Compare the smooth and new canopy of the Iridium to the rather weathered canopy of this Alpha 4.

The next outgoing column was newer than the rest, and supported a Holophane Syracuse Medium (QSM) lantern - a replacement from the mid-2000s.

The QSM may also have run a 150 Watt SON-T lamp.

The cover over the lamp control gear was missing from the next Alpha 4.

As well as the cover having disappeared, one of the bowl clips is also not correctly secured.

Given the amount of surface corrosion present on the Alpha 4's Thorn G.53260.T ballast, the cover may have been missing for a while.

An installation that retained its gear cover followed - the only visible rust here was on the bracket joint, heading downwards.

The next new column was still awaiting the fitting of a bracket and lantern.

The diameter of the column spigot differs, depending on whether the future lantern will be fitted post-top or side-entry. Generally, spigots for accepting post-top lanterns reduce to 76 mm, whilst they reduce less when bracketry is to be fitted.

A feature of this part of Duffield Road is the raised footway on one side of the road. A cast iron barrier (with which generations of Derbians will be familiar) segregates the footway from the carriageway.

The barrier was made locally over one hundred years ago.

This photograph, looking directly across at an old and new installation, reveals that the Alpha 4 wasn't quite correctly aligned on its bracket. Don't the two lanterns just make the perfect couple?

The original column door had long disappeared from this column's base. Owing to the length of the original door, two replacement doors had been fitted, and each was secured with a "Tamtorque" band. Interestingly, the base section of the new column is actually longer by a small amount, although only a standard-sized door is fitted.

This column retained its original door; however, its lock had failed and again, the door required banding to secure the column base.

Finally, we reach the Five Lamps junction, and the ornate column that gives the junction its name (albeit, a modern replica of the original, historical installation), comes into view. Naturally, now that the PFI has commenced along this road, I expect this installation to be replaced with a new column, complete with a bespoke bracket supporting five Iridiums...or perhaps not - doing so may cause anarchy to break out amongst historians!

The five lanterns all run compact fluorescent lamps.
