Derby's Street Lighting PFI Contract
South Street, City Centre
The existing lighting consisted of the following items in 1997. At the time, the road was undergoing significant changes as a result of the refurbishment of the former Derby Greyhound Stadium, including relighting; hence the rather confusing location descriptions and sequencing in the table.

The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 30th October 2010. Only a small amount of the lanterns installed on this road were replaced, due to the majority of the lighting being reasonably new.
Although probably not destined for replacement, this Thorn Beta 79 was photographed anyway, just in case.
This installation probably dates from the early-mid 2000s.
The following column was definitely due to be removed, however - the 'In/Out' spray instructions proving this column's demise. Owing to the proximity of cellars for the adjacent properties, the replacement column would be installed in the same position that the outgoing column was removed from, even if this did partially obscure the cast iron 'South St' nameplate. The lantern is a top-entry Thorn Beta 5.
The following column was installed on the opposite side of the road. A 1990s' Beta 5 was fitted here.
A Royce Thompson Monostar 1000 photocell was fitted here.
The new lanterns are fitted with Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux photocells.
Another top-entry Beta 5 was next. The replacement column here was situated away from the outgoing column.
The Beta 5 was fitted to a bracket that was designed for a side-entry lantern; hence the need to fit a top-entry adaptor. I love the crude appearance of the adaptor - perhaps it isn't the most attractive piece of kit in the world, but it certainly does the job, and is an interesting way of solving the problem of accommodating top-entry lanterns on side-entry brackets!
Modern lighting is just so bland in comparison!
A newer column followed. A shallow-bowled Beta 5 was fitted here.
The Iridium's bowl already looked rather scratched!
Walking up the steps of the embankment that once carried the Great Northern Railway's Friargate Line, another Beta 5 was installed on an Abacus base-hinged column. The replacement PFI column is situated a little further around the corner.
The footpath then passes a long-abandoned warehouse that was also used by the Railway. Another Abacus column and Beta 5 then came into view.
