The following photographs were taken on Saturday, 19th September 2015.
A gear-in-head Thorn Alpha 4 135 Watt SOX lantern attached to a 10 m column was first from Mansfield Road.
This was one of the last 135 Watt lanterns to be found in Derby - rather sobering, given that there used to be hundreds! A Royce Thompson SC1000/SAV 35 Lux photocell is nowadays fitted in the lantern's NEMA socket.
A Forest City LA428 twin 8 Watt sign lighting unit is attached to the column. A replacement door has been fitted to part of the column base, but notice that both the original upper and lower doors are still fitted as well - one of these must have rusted through. The presence of twin doors for a single-arm column suggests that a twin-lamp Atlas Alpha 8 lantern may once have been fitted here. If this is the case, the column is at least 41 years old - photographic evidence dating from 1974 proves that the twin-lamp installations were in use by then!
A 6 m column supporting a Philips XGS 103 35 Watt SOX lantern is one of two that are installed on the bridge itself.
The XGS 103 was fitted at some point after October 2012, replacing a defective Thorn Beta 79 70 Watt SON lantern.
The second column still retained its Beta 79, however. In 1974, a hockeystick-style column was installed at roughly the same location, and supported a Beta 7 lantern. The hockeystick column remained in place until at least 1996, although the Beta 7 may have been replaced before then.
A Zodion SS3DR photocell is fitted here.
Immediately after the bridge is passed, an 8 m column supporting the Beta 79's big brother, the Alpha 8, is to be seen. In 1974, an Alpha 3 was fitted here, although the Alpha 8 was in place by 1984.
A 150 Watt SON-E lamp is fitted. The lantern does not include provision for a photocell as it is group-controlled from elsewhere.
